Sample note · Unit 2 · Ch 12
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Live preview of your settings

Abraham Maslow said people meet their needs in an order, starting with the most basic.

First come physiological needs: pay that covers food, heat and rent. Then safety needs, such as a secure contract and a workplace that is not dangerous.

Above those sit social needs, the belonging that comes from being part of a team. Then esteem needs, where recognition and responsibility matter.

At the top is self-actualisation: work that stretches you and lets you use what you are good at.

A manager uses the order to decide what to offer. Recognition will not motivate someone whose wage does not cover the rent.

Practice set

Five questions on motivation theory. Time allowed: 20 minutes.

Our accessibility commitment

BizTeach is being built to WCAG 2.2 AA: full keyboard navigation, visible focus, labelled controls, and no meaning carried by colour alone. These four controls are the ones students asked for first.
